    Dear Macharia,

Thank you for your interest in Hydraulic ram pumps. The first thing to understand is that a ram pump needs water with a height difference to work with, for example a stream of water running downhill. Do you have that kind of circumstance? You can find more info on the applicability on the Akvopedia article at Ram pumps need to be of good quality, which means that you will have to buy one. I am unaware of any ram pump manufacturers in Kenya.

There are ways to make one yourself, but it is not the simplest of pumps: See this movie for how to make one yourself:

Second question to ask is how much land do you grow food on? For really small plots, a small diesel pump or a manually driven pump such as the locally produced rope pump ( , which can also be driven by animals or by bicycle, could also be an option. Another small scale option is the EMAS pump, which can be driven by foot: and, which can be made locally.

I hope this was helpful. Please let me know if you need more info.

    Best regards,
