    Dear Macharia,

Thank you for your interest in Hydraulic ram pumps. The first thing to understand is that a ram pump needs water with a height difference to work with, for example a stream of water running downhill. Do you have that kind of circumstance? You can find more info on the applicability on the Akvopedia article at http://www.akvo.org/wiki/index.php/Hydraulic_Ram_pump. Ram pumps need to be of good quality, which means that you will have to buy one. I am unaware of any ram pump manufacturers in Kenya.

There are ways to make one yourself, but it is not the simplest of pumps: See this movie for how to make one yourself: http://www.vimeo.com/8454559.

Second question to ask is how much land do you grow food on? For really small plots, a small diesel pump or a manually driven pump such as the locally produced rope pump (http://www.akvo.org/wiki/index.php/Rope_pump) , which can also be driven by animals or by bicycle, could also be an option. Another small scale option is the EMAS pump, which can be driven by foot: http://www.akvo.org/wiki/index.php/EMAS_pump and http://www.akvo.org/wiki/index.php/EMAS_pedal_pump, which can be made locally.

You might also find this movie inspiring: http://www.vimeo.com/8367454

I hope this was helpful. Please let me know if you need more info.

    Best regards,
